Part 1 — Real price anatomy, expressed in percentages
Let\'s be transparent. Take the price of any significant repair at us (iPhone display, MacBook battery, board repair) and deconstruct each component as a percentage of the final invoice:
| Cost component | % of total | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Part (OEM refurbished or aftermarket, with intra-community invoice) | ~50% | Paid via European fiscal invoice from certified suppliers. Manufacturer part warranty. |
| Intra-community shipping + customs + insurance | ~3% | Express courier EU → Bucharest, 2-4 business days. |
| Specialized labor (certified technician, microscope, calibration) | ~17% | Includes True Tone calibration where applicable, Repair Assistant pairing, Apple Diagnostics test, final functional test. |
| Operational overhead (workshop rent, utilities, equipment amortization) | ~5% | Real workshop in Bucharest, monthly costs in thousands of RON (rent + utilities + consumables). |
| Professional insurance + 12-month warranty fund | ~3% | Workshop policy covers customer devices under testing. Warranty fund for free in-warranty cases. |
| Net subtotal (before VAT) | ~78% | Real repair cost before taxes — sum of all elements above. |
| 19% VAT (paid to state) | ~16% | Paid monthly via D300 declaration to ANAF. Traceable in SAF-T (real-time fiscal reporting). |
| Net profit per intervention | ~6% | Covers equipment reinvestment, technical training, workshop growth. Honest margin, not generous. |
| FINAL CUSTOMER PRICE (100%) | 100% | With fiscal invoice, deductible for companies/PFA, 12-month warranty written on invoice. |
Real net margin of the workshop is in the 5-7% zone of price. The rest doesn\'t go into „greed" — it goes into warranty fund (repairs returning for free), equipment reinvestment (new microscope every 4-5 years, AST 2 software yearly), continuous technical training (microsoldering courses, certifications). Sustainable business model, not generous. Percentages vary slightly between repair types, but structure remains the same: part + labor represent the largest share; VAT to state is fixed ~16% of total; net profit is what\'s left at the end.
Part 2 — How backstreet shop reaches „magic" prices
Every „discount" has a source. Here are 6 methods backstreet shops use to artificially reduce price. None is necessarily moral or legal — but all have consequences for you, the customer.
Parts bought without invoice from AliExpress / eBay
Aftermarket displays on AliExpress cost a fraction of OEM refurbished or original parts with European invoice. The difference: the part is NOT Genuine Apple Part, it's either aftermarket with reduced specs (no True Tone, no ProMotion, incorrect Pencil behavior) or from unclear dismantling sources (see our dedicated article). Apple Repair Assistant permanently marks them „Unknown Part" — visible in Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History.
Real cost for you: You lose correct Battery Health, True Tone, ProMotion, and resale value of device drops significantly.
Partial „cash" payment — no fiscal invoice
Offer: „special price without invoice, X RON less." Reality: the shop evades 19% VAT owed to the state. PFA/companies wanting to deduct repair as expense CAN'T — without fiscal invoice, no deductible expense exists. You as individual have NO written proof of repair — warranty becomes verbal, hence nothing.
Real cost for you: Zero legal protection. If repair fails in 3-6 months, no channel for redress (consumer protection, court). Plus, contributing to „gray" economy.
Operates without VAT-registered company
Clearest signal of tax evasion: a shop boasting „20 years on the market" or „thousands of repairs per year" that is NOT a VAT-registered company. Mathematically impossible legally: at that volume, VAT threshold (300,000 RON/year) is exceeded long ago. Only explanation: systematic under-declaration of receipts — reports only a fraction of revenue to artificially stay under threshold, rest goes unrecorded.
Real cost for you: Operational non-scalability = no investment in real equipment, no access to legitimate parts channels (official GPD requires VAT invoice), no real training. Plus fiscal risk for you if paying by card/transfer and shop gets audited later.
Uses informal space (home, garage) — no workshop expenses
Without workshop rent (in thousands of RON/month), without professional utilities, without certified equipment, price can drop significantly. But without stereo microscope, thermal camera, hot air station, BGA station, BIOS programmer, oscilloscope — board-level repairs are practically impossible. Shop limits itself to „simple part swap" and pretends more complex repairs don't exist.
Real cost for you: Defects requiring microsoldering (PMIC, CD3215, charging IC, MOSFETs) declared „unrepairable" and you're sent to buy another device, even though 50-70% of cases were actually repairable.
„Invoice" printed from Word — or zero invoice
Reality in 2026: there's no more „invoice with half value" — the RO e-Factura system (mandatory B2B since 2024, B2C since 2025) makes that automatically detectable. Dubious shops have two variants: (a) they give you an A4 sheet printed from Word that looks like an invoice but has NO valid Romanian fiscal series in RO e-Factura — practically a decorative receipt without legal value; (b) they give you absolutely nothing and hope you don't insist. Verify: a real fiscal invoice appears in your SPV if requested by CNP/CUI or has an RO e-Factura QR code.
Real cost for you: Decorative receipt = zero executable warranty, zero fiscal deductibility, zero proof for consumer protection. Legally equivalent to nothing.
Accepts payment only cash or personal Revolut
The best anti-evasion filter you have as a customer: insist on paying by card through a POS connected to the VAT-registered company. Dubious shops will refuse or hesitate: „cash is better, we don't do cards", „transfer to my personal Revolut, it's faster", „IBAN on personal account, not on company." All three are red signals. Card payment through POS = traceable transaction to company with CUI = mandatory fiscal invoice = VAT collected and paid.
Real cost for you: If you pay cash or personal IBAN/Revolut: you're left without trace of transaction + shop stays in gray zone. If you pay by card: transaction becomes evidence (bank statement = payment proof) and shop is forced to issue fiscal invoice.
Part 3 — What you get at Radical Service for the price difference
Concrete. Verifiable. No „flawless experience" or other abstractions. Here are 6 material deliverables with every repair:
Fiscal invoice in RO e-Factura per Tax Code Art. 319
All repairs have complete fiscal invoice, automatically reported in RO e-Factura: intervention description, value with VAT detailed, 12-month warranty written on invoice. Usable for: company/PFA deduction, consumer protection enforcement, disputes, device insurance, second-hand sale with verifiable repair history.
Verifiable parts with intra-community invoice
For iPhone/iPad/MacBook: OEM refurbished or aftermarket (by model and budget), with intra-community invoice from certified European suppliers. Those entering Apple GPD program are correctly marked in Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History. For aftermarket parts we openly tell you they are aftermarket — we don't pretend they're something else.
Real professional equipment (tens of thousands of RON investment)
Stereo microscope, hot air station, BGA station, thermal camera, oscilloscope, USB-C analyzer, BIOS programmer, precision multimeter, Apple AST 2 software where accessible. Plus BoardView access and official schematics. We cover board-level repairs: PMIC microsoldering, charging IC, MOSFETs, SMD capacitors, proper BGA reflow.
12-month warranty written on invoice
Exact term, clear scope (labor + part), reasonable exclusions (subsequent fall, liquid, mains overvoltage without surge protector). Return with invoice — we resolve without arguments. If problem in first 90 days, manufacturer part warranty covers replacement. After 90 days up to 12 months, labor warranty covers re-intervention.
Transparent diagnostic with written report
We identify exactly the faulty chip (with BoardView), measure key voltages, thermal camera for hot spots. Written report with technical fault description (e.g. „PMIC U7800 burned, PP3V3_G3H rail missing = 0V"). Useful for second opinion or for AppleCare+ claim if device is still under warranty.
Honesty when repair NOT worthwhile
A significant percentage of old MacBooks with major defects we refuse at diagnostic stage (repair cost > second-hand value). Direct recommendation: buy new model or more recent second-hand. Difference vs dubious shops: they accept the repair, do superficial reflow, „verbal" 90-day warranty (until problem reappears), then send you to „another repair".
Part 4 — The right calculation: 3-year total cost of ownership
„Much less now" becomes something else in 12-18 months when you have to redo the repair. Comparison on 4 frequent scenarios, expressed as percentage difference and real impact over time:
| Operation | At us (with VAT) | Backstreet | 3-year cumulative reality |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone display (OEM refurbished) | Honest price with VAT, RO e-Factura invoice | ~25-35% cheaper, no fiscal invoice, aftermarket part undisclosed | Us: one repair, lasts as long as device. Backstreet: 50%+ chance of redoing in 6-12 months (weak part, no microscope labor). Total cumulative: more expensive by 15-40% over 3 years. |
| MacBook battery replacement | Honest price with VAT, OEM battery with compatible BMS | ~30-45% cheaper, clone battery without correct BMS | Us: 3-4 years trouble-free. Backstreet: clone battery lasts 12-18 months + real swelling risk (safety). Total cumulative: nearly equal or more expensive, plus risk of extensive device damage. |
| MacBook board repair (microsoldering) | Honest price with VAT, intervention on faulty chip with microscope | „Unrepairable, buy another" or superficial reflow at half price | Us: 3-5 years trouble-free. Backstreet reflow: 3-6 months until failure again, then BGA pads destroyed = re-repair costs 1.5-2× more at us. Or you buy new MacBook (cost tens of times higher). |
| iPad Pro screen replacement | Honest price with VAT, correct OLED, calibrated Pencil | ~35-45% cheaper, aftermarket LCD | Us: correct screen, working ProMotion, precise Pencil. Backstreet: ProMotion lost, Pencil uncalibrated, pixel inconsistency = re-repair in 8-12 months or device permanently degraded. |
Over 3-year horizon, the initial „savings" becomes additional expense or opportunity cost. Plus operational stress, lost time, frustration. Plus in case of board-level repairs: if someone does superficial reflow that fails, proper correction AFTER becomes 1.5-2× more expensive (BGA pads destroyed by repeated heating).
Part 5 — Fiscal benefits for PFA / LLC that aren\'t obvious at first sight
If you\'re PFA or LLC and use Apple device professionally, our invoice with VAT mathematically changes your real cost. Three concrete scenarios:
PFA / LLC using device professionally
With our invoice: Repair with VAT = FULLY deductible expense. Deduct VAT (19% recovered via first D300 declaration) + reduce profit/income tax by net expense value. Cumulative savings: roughly a quarter to a third of invoice value, depending on fiscal structure.
Without invoice: Repair without invoice = ZERO deduction. You pay full from pocket without recovering anything. If paying with company card and no fiscal invoice: ANAF can sanction you at audit for unjustified expense.
Company with devices for employees
With our invoice: All repairs are operational expenses, fully deductible value. Plus: our invoices include device serial number, useful for internal audit and asset management.
Without invoice: Fiscal risk: missing documents = unregistered expenses = under-declared profit = ANAF sanctions. Plus, internal audit becomes impossible without documentary trail of repairs.
Freelancer / liberal profession with PFA
With our invoice: MacBook repair → recover VAT via D300 + reduce income/norm tax. Net savings in 25-30% zone of invoice value. Plus, in case of ANAF inspection: repair proof = professional use proof for device.
Without invoice: No proof = ANAF inspector can reclassify device as personal use = loss of all previous deductibilities on device.
Real PFA calculation: combined fiscal savings (VAT recovered via D300 + income/norm tax reduction) typically lie in 25-30% of invoice value zone. Practically, the same repair backstreet at 75% of our price — without invoice — costs the same as ours, but without fiscal protection, executable warranty and verifiable part.
Part 6 — How to quickly recognize evasion
Three concrete signals you can verify before paying — all free, all public:
- Check the company on anaf.ro — ask for the shop\'s CUI and search for it on „Taxpayer Registry — VAT" at anaf.ro. Shop boasting „over 10 years on market" and NOT appearing as active VAT payer = mathematically impossible legally. Only explanation: systematic under-declaration.
- Ask to pay by card. Serious shop accepts card payment via POS connected to VAT-registered company. Dubious shop will hesitate, try to convince you „cash is better", or give you personal IBAN / personal Revolut. All three = red signals. Card payment guarantees automatic fiscal invoice + legally valid payment proof.
- Verify invoice in your SPV. After receiving invoice, log into ANAF Private Virtual Space — real fiscal invoice appears automatically under your CNP in 24-48 hours. If it doesn\'t appear: the invoice you received is decorative receipt, not valid fiscal document.
Part 7 — When backstreet shop IS the right choice (honesty)
We\'re not perfect and don\'t say you always must come to us. Here are scenarios when backstreet shop can be rational choice:
- Old iPhone you want sold immediately as second-hand — minimal investment, no expectation of long warranty. Resale value loss with non-original part smaller than price difference.
- Light fall with cracked glass but functional, phone you\'ll use 2-3 more months until buying another model — aftermarket display may suffice.
- Simple repair without motherboard implications — iPhone back glass swap, very old iPhone battery swap. Low technical risk.
- Extremely limited budget in family context — phone for child/grandparent, occasional use, no professional implications.
For anything else — daily-use professional device, board-level repair, warranty needed, deductible invoice, second-hand with verifiable history for good resale price — real economic calculation recommends service with fiscal invoice.
