Part 1 — How independent shops sourced parts before 2025
Before May 2025, if you took an iPhone to an unauthorized repair shop, you had three realistic options for parts:
- Refurbished parts: displays harvested from donor iPhones, often with minor cosmetic flaws. Original quality, but variable availability and partial pairing.
- Aftermarket parts (Aliexpress, eBay, Asian distributors): low price, uneven quality, "Unknown Part" iOS warnings, feature loss (True Tone, Battery Health, partial Face ID).
- Independent Repair Provider Program: genuine Apple parts, but only for certified shops and only for out-of-warranty devices. Complicated restrictions, annual audit, low number of approved shops.
The result: a polarised market. Either you paid more at Apple/AASP, or you accepted compromises at independent shops. Now there is a third option.
Part 2 — Apple's 4 parts programs (in 2026)
Apple now runs 4 parallel programs for genuine parts access. Each has a different target audience, restrictions and advantages. Here is the full comparison.
Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP)
Apple in-warranty repairs are performed only here or directly at Apple. High volume, but limited operational freedom.
Independent Repair Provider (IRP)
Launched 2019. The "only out-of-warranty" restriction made it unpopular. Apple reserves the right to reject applications without explanation.
Genuine Parts Distributor (GPD) — the new program
Announced May 28, 2025, expanded across Europe in 2025-2026. The most accessible option for end customers.
Self Service Repair (SSR)
On paper: democratisation of repair. In practice: a marketing trap for the average user. See our critical review.
Part 3 — Which parts are actually available through GPD
The program does not cover everything you might want — only what Apple decided to release. Updated list as of May 2026:
| Part | iPhone models | iPad models |
|---|---|---|
| Original display (LCD / OLED) Includes True Tone calibration via Repair Assistant. Without calibration = "Unknown Part" warning in Settings. | iPhone 12 — iPhone 17 Pro Max | iPad Air M2, iPad Pro M4, iPad mini A17 Pro, iPad A16 |
| Original battery Correct nominal capacity in Battery Health only after pairing via Repair Assistant. Without pairing = "Important Battery Message". | iPhone 12 — iPhone 17 Pro Max | All models above |
| Camera (front + back) Pro modules (telephoto, ultra-wide) in stock. Calibration required for optimal photography. | iPhone 12 — iPhone 17 Pro Max | Recent iPads |
| USB-C / Lightning port + bottom microphones Complete component including microphone flex. Simple pairing without calibration. | iPhone 12 — iPhone 17 Pro Max | Recent iPads |
| SIM tray Simple mechanical part, no pairing. Constant stock. | iPhone X and newer | Cellular iPads |
| Speaker (earpiece / loudspeaker) Earpiece with Face ID mesh requires Repair Assistant to avoid losing Face ID. | Partial availability on iPhone 12+ | Limited |
Important: Macs (MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio) are NOT covered by GPD in May 2026. For those products, the landscape is different — we explain it in the next section.
Part 4 — What about MacBook, iMac and Mac mini?
This is where Apple is still conservative. In May 2026, GPD does not include any Mac. The repair landscape for MacBook, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio remains fragmented — and it helps to know the 4 actual paths a shop can take to repair your Mac with genuine Apple parts (or technical equivalents).
1. AASP (Apcom, iStyle, Quickservice)
The only route with full access to genuine Mac parts, official Apple manuals, GSX, AST 2 and System Configuration. Covers all generations including in-warranty Macs. Downside: high prices (a MacBook Pro M3 top-case is 7,500+ RON at AASP), 5-10 day waits, mandatory appointment. Recommendation: for Macs in the first 12 months from purchase or with active AppleCare+.
2. Independent Repair Provider (IRP)
The only route for non-authorized shops to access genuine Apple parts for a limited set of Macs (mainly MacBook Air and MacBook Pro M1-M3). Key restriction: "out-of-warranty only" — the shop cannot touch in-warranty Macs. Reality in Romania: very few shops are in IRP for Mac, and the parts available are limited to displays and batteries.
3. Self Service Repair (SSR) — for the brave user
Apple sells genuine parts for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro M1+, Mac mini, Mac Studio directly via selfservicerepair.eu. The catch: long manuals, 36 kg tool kit with refundable deposit, post-repair System Configuration controlled by Apple, real risk of bricking if you slip. Who it actually works for: experienced technicians or advanced enthusiasts. For the average user — no. Full details in our critical SSR review.
4. Serious independent service — how we work on Macs
Without a GPD for Mac, a competent shop has 4 tools at hand:
- Microsoldering on specific components — PMIC, USB-C controller, audio codec, SSD controller, retimer. From 1,000 RON. Much cheaper than replacing the whole board.
- Verified refurbished parts — displays, top-cases, keyboards, hinges harvested from donor Macs with verified history. 24 month labour warranty.
- Technically identical OEM components — batteries with the same BMS chip, Thunderbolt external SSDs to extend storage (when the internal SSD dies). Identical specs, manufacturer warranty.
- Data recovery services — when the integrated SSD is dead, we work with specialised labs (DriveSavers, Wozniak Data Recovery). Cost 800-3,500 RON, recovery chance 40-70%.
Practical tip: if your MacBook is in the first 12 months and the fault is not your doing, go to Apple/AASP — the warranty covers manufacturing defects. If it is out of warranty or the fault is yours, professional evaluation at a serious independent shop gives the best options, often at 30-50% of Apple's direct price.
Part 5 — What it means concretely for you as a user
The GPD program does not just change how we source parts. It changes what you receive as a user when you bring your iPhone to a serious independent shop.
The part you receive is the same one used at the Apple Store
The distributors receive parts directly from the official Apple supply chain. The display, battery or camera are identical to what you find at the Genius Bar — same part number, same quality tests, same manufacturer warranty.
The cost is generally lower than at an AASP
Independent shops with GPD access do not pay monthly fees to Apple, do not maintain an authorised showroom, and have no recurring audit. Those savings are reflected in the final price for you. For an iPhone 17 display, the difference can be 300-500 RON less than Apple direct.
You benefit from Repair Assistant — no "Unknown Part" warnings
Starting with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, Apple introduced Repair Assistant — a pairing process that runs after replacement. It is still a genuine part, but now with full calibration: True Tone, Face ID, Battery Health, Camera Calibration. No more warnings in Settings → General → About.
The manufacturer warranty stays valid
GPD parts come with the official Apple manufacturer warranty on the component. That means if the display has a manufacturing defect in the first 90 days, replacement is free — exactly like at the Apple Store. Labour warranty from the independent shop is separate (at our shop: 24 months).
The repair is no longer blocked by an active warranty
The older IRP program explicitly forbade independent shops from touching in-warranty devices. GPD does not have this restriction — if you choose us over Apple for any reason (time, distance, preference), you can do it without losing access to genuine parts.
Part 6 — Actual program limitations
GPD is not perfect — and it helps to know where the limits are before choosing it as a universal solution.
Macs are NOT included yet
In May 2026, the program only covers iPhone and iPad. MacBook, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio remain on the IRP list (with restrictions) or AASP. For Mac repairs, the choice is still: Apple direct, AASP, or independent shop with parts from other sources.
Parts pairing is still a reality
Even if the part is 100% genuine, without Repair Assistant you get iOS warnings and lose features (True Tone, detailed Battery Health, Face ID on certain components). Make sure the shop actually runs Repair Assistant — ask explicitly before the repair.
Older models are not covered
iPhone 11, iPhone XR, iPhone X and older do not benefit from the program (except SIM tray for iPhone X+). For these models, shops use either IRP parts (if they have access) or verified refurbished parts of known quality.
The part is not sold directly to the end user
GPD is for repair services, not for users. If you want to order the part and install it yourself, the correct route is Self Service Repair (selfservicerepair.eu) — see our critical article about that program.
Part 7 — Real price comparison (May 2026)
Two common scenarios with current indicative prices for Bucharest. Numbers vary by exact model, stock, and VAT applied.
Cracked iPhone 14 display — actual options in Bucharest (May 2026)
- Apple direct: Apple online repair: ~1,450 RON for the part + labour, 5-7 days
- AASP (authorized): Apcom / iStyle service: ~1,350 RON, 2-3 days, Apple warranty
- GPD (independent): Independent shop with GPD (our shop): 1,100-1,250 RON VAT included, same day, 24 months warranty
- Avoid: Aliexpress aftermarket part: 350-550 RON + Repair Assistant risk, no True Tone
iPhone 13 Pro battery — 2026 comparison
- Apple direct: 569 RON (Apple listed price) + travel + appointment wait
- AASP (authorized): 550-620 RON at authorized chains, booking 5-10 days out
- GPD (independent): Independent shop with GPD: 380-480 RON, in 60 minutes
- Avoid: Aftermarket battery: 150-250 RON, real lifespan 6-12 months, permanent iOS warning
Part 8 — How to verify a part really came from GPD
Three simple checks, before and after the repair:
- Before: Ask explicitly for the distributor name. The correct answer is "MobileSentrix" or "Mobileparts.shop". Anything else raises questions.
- During the repair: The shop runs Repair Assistant via iOS / iPadOS — takes about 5-10 minutes, requires your Apple ID temporarily for pairing.
- After the repair: Settings → General → About — scroll to "Parts and Service History". The part must appear with the note "Genuine Apple Part". If it shows "Unknown Part" or "Unable to verify", the part is NOT from GPD or pairing was not completed.
